English Language A Level at Farlingaye High School

Course description

This course gives students the opportunity to explore the English language in a variety of contexts. You will develop an understanding of the concepts and methods appropriate for the analysis and study of language, applying this knowledge both to spoken and written language. You will engage creatively with language, developing your ability to produce your own original writing. You will also study how we acquire language and how our language ‹•ƒơ‡…‡†„›Š‡•‹ƒ‹‘™‡Ƥ† ourselves in. This course also examines the history of the English language and will culminate in an independent investigation looking at how language shapes identity. Units stud

Course content

AS Level

Component 1: Analysis of Texts in  in Context (two hour exam, 50% of qualification)

  • Section A: Spoken Language of the media; one question based on the reading of unseen transcriptions.
  • Section B: Written Language; one question based on the reading of unseen texts.

Component 2: Using Language (two hours exam, 50% of qualification) 

  • Section A: Investigating Data; one question presented in several parts based on the reading of a corpus of data.
  • Section B: Critical & Creative writing; one original writing task and commentary


A Level

Component 1: Language Concepts Issues (two hour exam, 30%)

  • Section A: Analysis of Spoken Language.
  • Section B: Language Issues; one question based on the study of four topic areas: Standard and Non-Standard English, language and power, language and situation, and language acquisition.

Component 2: Language Change Over Time (two hours 15 minutes exam, 30% of qualification)

  • Section A: Language Change Over Time.
  • Section B: English in the 21st Century.

Component 3: Creative and Critical Use of Language (105 minute exam, 20% of qualification)

Component 4: Language and Identity (coursework, 20% of qualification)

  • 2,500-3,500 word language investigation based on the study and research of a topic related to language and identity 

Entry requirements

(GCSE grades) English Language B and English Literature C


AS : 100% written examinations

A Level: 80% written examinations, 20% coursework

Future opportunities

English A Levels are always well considered by universities and this course combines detailed analysis of language with the development of skills as both a producer and interpreter of language.

Students interested in a media career, including journalism, will benefit from being given opportunities to develop their own creativity, both in the ways they think about language and in the ways they develop expertise in using language to communicate.

Careers in law and teaching might also be an eventual outcome for students.
