Music A Level at Kingswood Secondary Academy

Course description

Performing (30%)
– Students will need to perform for 5-6 minutes. The
standards of pieces to be played are GRADE 5 and can be in
any style.
Composing (30%)
– Students will write one 3 minute composition based on one
of four briefs. They will also write CD sleeve notes for their
composition. Students have 15 hours to complete their
composition, and 1 hour to write their sleeve notes.
Musical Understanding (40%)
– There are three sections based on ‘familiar’ music in the 2
hour exam; Listening, Investigating musical styles and
Understanding Chords and Lines.
In preparation for this, students will follow a programme of
aural, dictation, theory and four part harmony work,
alongside studying the set pieces of music.
Performance (30% = 15% of total A2)
– Students extend their skills as a performer and produce a
12–15 minute recital. The standard of pieces to be played is
GRADE 6, and can be in any style.
Composition and technical Study (30% = 15% of total A2)
– Students choose between either two Compositions, two
Technical studies or one of each. Each composition needs to
be 3 minutes long.
Further Musical Understanding (40% = 20% of total A2)
– There are 3 sections based on both ‘familiar’ and
‘unfamiliar’ music in this 2 hour exam; Aural Analysis, Music
in Context, Continuity and Change.
Students are expected to extend their own listening in
addition to the set works being studied.


Entry requirements

5+ A*-C grades at GCSE including grade C in English. Students should
be able to play/sing to a good standard (grade 5 where possible)
and be able to read traditional music notation.
Students without both of the above will be taken into consideration if
they possess a hardworking attitude and are prepared to put in extra time
to achieve the performing/ reading skills.



AS: The course will be in three sections:

Performing (30%)
– The performing units are coursework based, internally
assessed and externally moderated.

Composing (30%)
– The composing units are coursework based and
externally assessed.

Musical Understanding (40%)
– The musical understanding units (based on musical eras
and pieces studied during the course) are examined at the
end of each year.

A2: The course will be in three sections:
– Performance (30% = 15% of total A2).
– Composition and technical Study (30% = 15% of total A2).
– Further Musical Understanding (40% = 20% of total A2).

Future opportunities

University or College course – performance based BA,
composition based BMus, historical and analysis based BE’d.
Teaching – school, class based or peripatetic.
Session musician, composer/song writer.
