A' Level Physics at Bishop Young Church of England Academy
The A-level course involves the following topics: • 1 Measurements and their errors • 2 Particles and radiation • 3 Waves • 4 Mechanics and materials • 5 Electricity • 6 Further mechanics and thermal physics • 7 Fields and their consequences • 8 Nuclear physics • 9 Astrophysics Assessment is by 3 exam papers, each of 2 hours duration. Paper 1 covers 1-5 plus half of 6, paper 2 covers the other half of 6 and 7, 8 and Paper 3 covers 9 and practical skills and data analysis. Many of the topics build on prior learning at GCSE, but there are also many areas which introduce new material, in some cases from the cutting edge of modern science- though thankfully not in full mathematical detail!
To access this course you will need to have studied Additional Science GCSE or Physics GCSE and will need a total of two good 5 grades in Science GCSEs. Good literacy and mathematical skills are also essential, so we ask for at least a 5 grade in English Language and a B grade or above in Mathematics.
