English Literature A Level at Hammersmith Academy

Course description

English Literature is designed to be innovative and enrich the literacy and literary appreciation of all students. Students’ needs are met through a variety of strategies, from challenging lessons that expect students to aim for (and understand how to aim for) the highest levels of progress in every lesson, through to extra-curricular clubs and trips in which students practically apply their learning.

Students will read across various time periods, styles of writing and genres, from the older traditions of English literature to the new, as well as read, watch and listen to a wide variety of texts, discussing the ideas they provoke. The course teaches students the skills to read well, to be critical and to be articulate.

The English department is committed to experimenting with new ways in which creative and digital media can enhance the student learning experience. We work closely across the curriculum, in particular with the Media and Drama departments, to explore links that make students’ learning more practical and based in the real world.
