Course content

Graphic Communication is about developing the ability to communicate visually; using innovation and creativity to solve design problems, exploring media and design processes to communicate ideas. The subject is delivered through creative graphic design projects, integrating written and practical work to give relevance and depth to projects.

Entry requirements

Normally students 16 - 19 years of age will require a minimum of 6 GCSEs at grades A* - C, one of which must be either GCSE Mathematics or GCSE English Language and including a minimum of Grade C in Graphics or Art and Design or a portfolio of work. Entry for mature students without formal qualifications is at the discretion of the Faculty.


AS Level - One coursework unit worth 60% plus supervised timed task worth 40% of the overall grade.

A Level - One coursework unit worth 60% plus a supervised timed task worth 40%.

Future opportunities

A Levels provide an excellent basis for progression to Higher level qualifications such as degrees or Higher National Diplomas. Graphic Design can provide skills which can be used in a wide range of occupations including Architecture, Art Therapy, Advertising, Typography, Illustration, Computer Design, Photography, Packaging, Corporate ID, Animation, Multimedia, Fashion, Surface Pattern, Project Design, Industrial Design, Fine Art, Gallery Work, Exhibition Organiser, Teaching.
