End of module assessment. Each module has a written examination of 1 hour. Each examination can be re-sat with the best mark carried forward. Teacher assessment of practical skills / or a practical exam is available. Practical skills assessed in the first year are worth 20% of the final AS grade. In year 2 coursework is assessed in a more extended single investigation and is again worth 20% of the final grade.
A’ Level Biology can provide a relevant qualification for further study in Higher Education leading to a career in many fields e.g. Doctor, Nurse, Dentist, Science Journalist, Medical Laboratory Scientist, Nature Conservationist, Marine Scientist, Veterinary Surgeon and Assistant, Teacher, Biochemist, Forensic Scientist etc. Many students have progressed from St Chad’s to University to study Biology (see the display in Science)
Throughout the course you will develop your investigative and practical skills. You will have opportunities to study Biology out of school, e.g. Anglesey, as well as attending lectures and visiting relevant places of interest, e.g. Electron Microscopy at Staffordshire University, Classification at Chester Zoo. Other important details: Throughout the course you will be continuously working towards short-term targets I.e. end of module examinations. This will require consistent commitment over the two year course. However, the advantages of the modular approach include: Regular feedback on your progress You can re-sit modules to improve your grade There is no terminal examination
