English Language A Level at Queen Katharine Academy

Course description

This four-unit specification helps students use, understand and analyse spoken and written language for particular audiences and contexts.

Students develop their ability to express themselves in speech and writing, producing texts for different audiences, purposes and in different genres.

Less theory-driven than A-level English Language A , the course is ideal for those wanting to study English Language, Linguistics or English Studies in higher education.

Course content

You will study the development of children’s language in spoken, written and multimodal forms as well as evaluating language diversity or language change and the way that it is used to present ideas, attitudes and opinions. You will also learn a range of methods in order to analyse language.

You will learn writing skills and methods of language analysis. You will develop subject expertise by engaging creatively and critically with a range of texts and discourses.

Entry requirements

You will need at least a C in English at GCSE and 5 A*- C grades overall.


Units 3.1 and 3.1 are examinations lasting 2hours and 30 minutes each. Unit 3.3 is coursework assessed by your teacher and moderated by the exam board.

Future opportunities

Students go on to a wide variety of university courses and employment with A Level English Language.
