Health and Social Care BTEC Level 3 National Extended at Beechwood School

Course description

The BTEC level 3 National extended certificate in Health & Social Care is designed to support progression into further education, training or employment, as it offers a mix of both theoretical and vocational learning. It provides a broad basis of study for the Health and Social Care sector.

The qualification is designed to support progression to higher education when taken as part of a programme of study that includes other appropriate BTEC Nationals or A levels.

Course content

Year 1 - 2 units, both mandatory

  • Unit 1 Human Lifespan development: Externally assessed. 90 minute paper in June
  • Unit 6 Meeting Individual Care and Support Needs: Internally assessed

Year 2 units – one mandatory and one optional

  • Unit 2 Working in Health and Social Care: Externally assessed. 90 minutes paper in June
  • Unit 16 Supporting Individuals with Additional Needs – internally assessed

The Health and Social Care sector is a major employer of almost 4 million people in the UK, many of which are highly skilled. Almost 1.7 million job openings are expected over the period to 2020. It also makes a vital contribution to all other aspects of the economy and society by creating a healthy and productive workforce and by caring for the ageing and the vulnerable.
