Maths (MEI) A2 at St Paul's Catholic School for Girls

Course description

You will cover topics such as geometry, calculus, trigonometry and algebra and gain the ability to manipulate figures, and use abstract reasoning and logic in problem solving.  The course builds up understanding of key mathematical concepts gradually and sequentially. Topics such as differentiation and integration are covered in all the Core modules and form part of the essential mathematical toolkit needed for higher study.

Course content

 

A2 modules

Core 3 and Core 4 which are both compulsory modules.  Third module would be Statistics 1, Statistics 2 or Decision Mathematics 1.

Entry requirements

Minimum of Grade A at GCSE level, strong algebraic skills are an advantage.

Assessment

For each examination that you take you are given a uniform mark out of 100 and a letter grade.  A grade “A” corresponds to a mark of 80-100, grade B to 70-79, grade C to 60-69 etc.  Below 40 is a grade U.The uniform marks from the three modules are totalled and grade are allocated as follows

240-300 Grade A
210-239 Grade B
180-209 Grade C
150-179 Grade D
120-149 Grade E
0-119 Grade U

Future opportunities

 At the end of the course, you could progress to:

  • A Higher Education course in a related area, such as Engineering, Science and Computing

Employment or further training in one of the many areas of employment that values a Maths qualification, such as computing, accounting or engineering. A level Maths is seen by many employees as solid evidence that you have good academic ability and are capable of higher level work
