Further Mathematics A Level at De Montfort School

Course description

On top of the six modules you study for your Mathematics A Level, you will study a further six modules for your Further Mathematics A Level. There is greater freedom with the choice of modules in the Further Mathematics A Level and the order in which they are taught will depend on the make up of the timetable.

Course content

Compulsory Modules:

  • Further Pure 1: This module introduces some of the more complicated aspects of mathematics, such as; complex numbers, hyperbola and parabolas, matrices and proof by induction.
  • Further Pure 2 & 3: These modules build on the skills taught in Core 3 and Core 4 of A Level Mathematics. Only one of these two modules is compulsory and the completion of both will depend on the abilities of the students on the course. Topics in FP2 and FP3 include; vectors and planes, matrices differential equations and further calculus.

Optional Modules:

  • Statistics 1 & 2
  • Decision 1& 2
  • Mechanics 1,2 & 3

Entry requirements

We will be requiring students to have obtained a Grade 8 to be considered for A Level Further Mathematics. You will need to be hard working and organised. Successful mathematics students have a desire to understand the subject further and have great perseverance and drive.

Assessment

Each module is assessed at the end of the year with a 1 hour 30 minute exam. Each examination can award up to 100 marks with your grades for both the AS and A2 qualifications coming from your total marks for three and six modules respectively.

Future opportunities

Further Mathematics is highly regarded by the top universities and is fast becoming a requirement if you are considering taking your study of mathematics beyond Sixth Form.
