The Pearson Edexcel Level 3 Advanced GCE in Urdu (listening, reading and writing) consists of      three externally-examined papers that assess listening, reading and writing skills. These assessments will be set and marked by Pearson.

Students must complete all assessments in May/June in any single year.

Content and Assessment

The A level courses build on and extend the skills and knowledge you have acquired at GCSE. You will also be expected to read a range of texts, both fact and fiction, watch three movies and to write in a variety of registers.

The course consists of Units:

Unit 1 - Translation into English, reading Comprehension and Writing (research question) in Urdu

Unit 2 - Translation into Urdu and written response to works.

Unit 3 - Listening, reading and writing in Urdu.

All three units covered will be part of the examinations taken at the end of Year 13.

A Level Urdu is useful in a wide range of careers. It is accepted by universities and colleges of Higher Education. It is possible to go on to study for a degree in Urdu either as a single subject or combined with other subjects such as History, Politics, Economics and Law. In many public service departments, such as the Health Service, Local Authorities and Social Services Urdu is also often a valuable asset.

Entry

You will need to have achieved at least a Grade 4 in GCSE Urdu and will need to have an interest in communicating in both spoken and written Urdu.

      Introduction

      The Governing Body of Jack Hunt School (Trust) is the Admissions Authority for the school and responsible for admissions to the Sixth Form.

      The school welcomes applications from external applicants as well as those currently at the school.  The capacity for the Sixth Form is 300 places which is a combined figure for both Years 12 and 13.

      The Published Admission Number for external students to join the Sixth Form is 10 places each year.

      Admission to the Sixth Form

      1. Admission to the Sixth Form will be considered for students currently in Year 11 at the school and from those external to the school.

      2. The application process for places in the Sixth Form will be the same for Year 11 students currently at the school and those external to the school.

      3. The entry requirements for admission will be the same for Year 11 students currently at the school and those external to the school.

      4. A conditional offer of a place to external applicants will only be made on the basis of a satisfactory reference from their previous school / college and availability of spaces in chosen subject areas.

      All applications must be received by the published date (see Appendix 2).

      Minimum Entry Requirements

      All those seeking admission to the Sixth Form must achieve the necessary grades for access onto the courses they have chosen.

      For entry onto A Level courses the minimum entry requirement is six full course GCSEs at Grade 4 or above including Grade 4 in English Language and Mathematics at GCSE. For some courses there is no requirement to have studied the subject prior to the Sixth Form. Students may include one Vocational qualification such as BTEC or Cambridge National Course as part of their six 9-4 but may find Level 3 A Level courses extremely challenging with this profile.

      For some individual subjects a grade 5 or 6 in Mathematics will be required. There are also specific subject requirements for Science A Levels. Please check the individual subject pages carefully to note those requirements.

      Students will be required to study a minimum of three subjects in Year 13 to full A Level award.

      Progression from Year 12 to 13 is dependent on good behaviour, good attendance and also on students consistently acting upon and following the academic instructions from their teachers.

      Applications

      Applications should be made through UCAS Progress.

      Oversubscription Criteria

      The over-subscription criteria for the Sixth Form will be applied where the number of external applicants who meet the minimum entry requirements for the Sixth Form exceeds the published admission number and admission will be determined in accordance with the following admissions criteria:

      1. Children in care (children in public care) and children who were in care, but ceased to be because they were adopted (or became subject to a residence order or special guardianship order).

       

      1. Children living in the catchment areas of primary schools:
        Gladstone Primary School, Highlees Primary School, Longthorpe Primary School, Middleton Primary School, Ravensthorpe Primary School, Thorpe Primary School and West Town Primary School. This includes children living within the above catchments who may be attending Sacred Heart Primary School and other primary schools.
      1. Students who have physical impairment or who are deaf for which the school has enhanced resource provision.
      1. Up to 5 places in any one academic year for children of permanent employees whose place of work is Jack Hunt School at the time of admission. Where the member of staff has been employed for more than 2 years and/or has been recruited to fill a vacant post for which there is a demonstrable skill shortage. Where more than five applications are received preference will be given to permanent employees with the longest period of continuous employment by the school.
         
      2. Where the child has a brother or sister attending the school at time of admission (the definition of brother or sister is contained in the local authority admissions booklet issued by your primary school).
      1. Any other applicant.

      Where the number of applicants exceeds the number of places within any of the above criteria priority will be given to those living nearest the school measured in a straight line between the centre of the home address and the centre of the school site.

      Late Applications

      Where the over-subscription criteria are used, applications received from external applicants after the published date will be considered last.
       

      False Information

      Where governors have made an offer of a place in the Sixth Form on the basis of an intentionally misleading application the offer of a place will be withdrawn.

      Where the oversubscription criteria are used, applications received from external applicants after the published date will be considered last.

      Appeals

      Any student refused the offer of a place in the Sixth Form has the right of appeal to an independent appeals panel.

      A Level Courses (General Requirements)

      • Six full course GCSEs at Grade 4 or above, including Grade 4 in English Language and Mathematics.
      • Vocational Level 2 courses (e.g. BTEC, Cambridge National, VCERT) at Pass with five other full course GCSEs at Grade 4 or above including Grade 4 in English Language and Mathematics.  Only 1 vocational subject can be included.
      • A Grade 4 or above in the subjects to be studied (unless specified below).

      Appendix 1 Minimum Entrance Requirements

      A Level Courses (Specific Subject Requirements)

      Art - students who gained a 6 at GCSE or who have not studied the subject at GCSE may be considered for this course subject to recommendation by the Curriculum Area Leader for Art. A portfolio of work must be submitted for those who have not followed a GCSE course.

      Biology - at least a Grade 5 in GCSE Mathematics. If students study Combined Science, they must achieve a Grade 6-6 or above. It is important that students obtain a Grade 6 or above in the individual Biology units. If students study Separate Science, they must achieve a Grade 6 or above in GCSE Biology.

      Business Studies - at least a Grade 5 in GCSE Mathematics and a Grade 4 in English Language.

      Chemistry - at least a Grade 6 in GCSE Mathematics. If students study Combined Science, they must achieve a Grade 6-6 or above. It is important that students obtain a Grade 6 or above in the individual Chemistry units.  If students study Separate Science, they must achieve a Grade 6 or above in GCSE Chemistry.

      Economics - at least Grade 5 in Mathematics and Grade 4 in English Language GCSE.

      English Language & Literature - at least Grade 4 in English Language GCSE.

      English Literature – at least Grade 4 in English Language and Literature GCSE.

      Film Studies - at least Grade 4 in English Language and Literature GCSE.

      French - at least Grade 4 at GCSE.

      Geography – at least a Grade 4 in Geography GCSE and at least Grade 4 in GCSE Mathematics and GCSE English (Language or Literature).

      History - at least a Grade 4 in GCSE History and Grade 4 in GCSE English Language. Students who have not previously studied History or achieved a Grade 4 in History would be considered at the discretion of the CAL and Head of Sixth Form.

      Mathematics - guaranteed entry for students with at least Grade 6 in GCSE Mathematics.

      Further Mathematics - at least Grade 7 on the Mathematics GCSE Higher Paper.

      Music - achieve at least Grade 5 at GCSE Music. Instrumentally or vocally you should aim to be approximately at or above Grade 5 standard. It is also expected that students learn the theory of music to Grade 5 standard, and possess a reasonable grasp of English.

      Physical Education – at least Grade 4 in Science and Grade 4 English Language GCSE.  If students have studied GCSE PE then a Grade 4 must be achieved.

      Physics - at least a Grade 6 in GCSE Mathematics. If students study Combined Science, they must achieve a Grade 6-6 or above. It is important that students obtain a Grade 6 or above in the individual Physics units.  If students study Separate Science, they must achieve a Grade 6 or above in GCSE Physics.

      Product Design - achieve at least a Grade 5 in Design Technology GCSE and a Grade 4 in Mathematics is required.

      Psychology - at least Grade 4 in Mathematics and English Language GCSE.

      RE - at least Grade 4 at GCSE English Language or Literature is the minimum required as well as a 4 grade in GCSE Religious Education (if taken) or an equivalent written based subject.

      Sociology - at least Grade 4 in English Language GCSE.

      Spanish - at least Grade 4 at GCSE.

      Theatre Studies - at least Grade 4 in English (Language or Literature) GCSE.  If you have taken GCSE Drama it is expected you will have achieved a Grade 4.

      Urdu - at least a Grade 4 in GCSE.

      Health & Social Care - Level 3 OCR Cambridge Technical Extended Certificate

      Six full course GCSEs at Grade C / Grade 4-5 or above one must be in English.

      Applied Science BTEC Level 3

      Students must have the following requirements in Science:

      Combined Science, they must achieve a Grade 4-4 or above and at least a Grade 4 in all individual units of Biology, Chemistry and Physics.  Separate Science, they must achieve a Grade 4 or above in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. All individual units must be at least a Grade 4.  Students must also obtain a Grade 5 or above in GCSE Mathematics.
