Art and Design (Digital Design) Level 3 at Northampton College

Course description

This course is designed for those who enjoy Art and Design but are unsure of which career path to follow and wish to explore all the possibilities. The first year is broad-based and will cover graphic design, fashion and textiles, fine art and 3D design. You will develop skills in drawing and the use of variety of media and materials, whilst exploring the work of artists and designers, both historical and contemporary. Year 2 is more specialist, supporting your area of interest and application to a Higher Education course. You will finish by writing and completing a final major project and mounting an exhibition of your work. Throughout, you will be encouraged to develop your skills in literacy and communication, and will receive strong personal tutorial support.The course is taught through vocationally relevant project work and is highly practical in nature. As the course progresses students are encouraged to take an increasingly more independent approach to their work and to explore the specialist area which most interests them.The topics you will study include:- Drawing- Contextual Studies- Materials and techniques in 2 and 3 dimensions- Graphic Design- Textiles- Fine Art- Computers in Art and Design- PrintmakingThere will be an opportunity for you to take GCSE Maths if you do not already have a Grade C in this subject.

Students who wish to progress to university in an Art and Design area.

Entry requirements

4 GCSEs at Grade C or above including English and Art or a Merit Grade at Level 2 in Art and Design plus GCSE English at Grade C or the equivalent Adult Literacy, Key Skills in Communication or Functional Skills qualification.You will also need a portfolio of artwork demonstrating your ability in Art and Design.


Portfolio/Assignment based assessment working with strict deadlines.

Future opportunities

On successful completion of this qualification students could continue their studies to a Foundation course in Art and Design, Higher National Diplomas or Degree level in various specialist Art and Design subjects.

Further information

All Level 3 Art and Design students at Booth Lane are advised to purchase a starter kit of essential media and equipment in year one at a cost of £90. Each year, students will be advised to pay a fee toward the materials they will use (approx £75 each year) and another £65 to cover trips and visits to galleries (approx £370 over the whole course). At Daventry students will be able to buy some media, materials and equipment from the college shop and are recommended to pay £45 each year for consumable materials and another £20 each year for trips.Students aged 19-23 at the start of the course will be required to pay a BTEC registration fee of approximately £175.All fees are payable at enrolment.
