Course description

AS Spanish

Terms 1 and 2

Social issues and trends

We will look at aspects of Hispanic society which will include modern and traditional values, cyberspace and equal rights. There will be a focus on grammar and a selection of films and songs.

Terms 3 and 4

Artistic culture We will focus on modern day Hispanic idols, Spanish regional identity and cultural heritage and landscape. Once again there will be a focus on grammar and a selection of films and songs.

Terms 5 and 6

Exam focus and topic review.

Exam

There are three exams at AS Level: a speaking exam (30%) (conducted by your teacher); a listening/reading/writing exam with a translation passage into English (40%); a written exam (30%) which includes an essay (250 words minimum) and a translation into Spanish.

 

A level Spanish

A Level is a combination of the AS course and:

Terms 1 and 2

Aspects of Spanish-speaking society We will focus on multiculturalism in Hispanic society which will include immigration, racism and integration. There will be a focus on grammar and a selection of films and songs.

Terms 3 and 4

Aspects of political life in the Spanishspeaking world

We will focus on today’s youth, tomorrow’s citizens, monarchies, republics and dictatorships and popular movements. There will be a focus on grammar and a selection of films and songs.

 

Terms 5 and 6

Exam focus and topic review.

Exam

There are three exams at A Level: a speaking exam (15%) (conducted by your teacher) and involves a discussion based on a stimulus card and general conversation based on the topics covered. The listening/reading/writing exam (35%) includes two 100-word translations. There is also a writing exam based on a text or film you have studied with a minimum 300-word essay.

Entry requirements

5 GCSE grades A* - C including English and/or maths and grade B in GCSE Spanish.
