Course description

Do you have an interest in finance? Enjoy working with numbers? This higher level apprenticeship is ideal for anyone looking to develop their accounting career.

Course content

You will study all of the mandatory units listed below and chose two of the optional units. You will also study: •Employment, Rights and Responsibilities (ERR) Booklet •Level 2 Functional Skills in English and maths •Personal Learning and Thinking Skills (PLTS) Mandatory Units •Management Accounting: Budgeting – Preparing budgets using various methods and interpreting and reporting the information •Management Accounting: Decision and Control – Preparing, analysing and reporting on financial information •Financial Statements of Limited Companies – Preparing company accounts using international standards, consolidating accounts for companies and interpreting information from financial information. •Accounting Systems and Control – A synoptic based assessment based around making changes to an accounting system Optional Units •Business Tax – Completing corporation tax returns and supporting computations for incorporated businesses •Personal Tax – Calculating income from all sources and identifying taxable and non-taxable items – Preparing accurate computations and complete relevant parts of self-assessment tax returns •External Auditing – Planning an audit identifying areas for verification and associated risks – Conducting a supervised audit. •Cash and Treasury Management – Using statistical techniques and financial information to prepare income and expenditure forecasts. •Credit Management – Understanding relevant legislation and the impact on credit management. As part of the Professional Diploma in Accounting, you will also study towards a Level 4 Business qualification.

Entry requirements

Level 3 Advanced Diploma in accounting.


For the Accounting qualification, assessment will be through computer based throughout the course. You will also have a synoptic assessment at the end of the course, assessing knowledge and understanding of the whole qualification. For the Business qualification, you will be assessed by your assessor using a portfolio of evidence, practical demonstrations and assignments. You will be assessed both in College and in your place of work.
