Mathematics AS & A Level at Bridgewater High School

Course description

Pure Mathematics develops algebraic skills to solve problems. You will build on topics from GCSE such as vectors, graphs, trigonometry and proof as well as learning new topics including differentiation and integration, logarithms and numerical methods. 

Mechanics involves solving the type of problems you study in Physics. Topics studied include kinematics, Newton's laws and moments. 

Statistics involves analysing data and is relevant to all courses, but in particular Biology and Psychology. You build on topics from GCSE such as probability as well as learning new topics such as Statistical sampling, distributions and hypothesis testing. You will be expected to be familiar with a large data set.

Entry requirements

Grade 6 in GCSE Maths. 


In Year 12 you will take 2 exams to complete AS Maths. The Pure exam is worth two-thirds of the award and lasts 2 hours. The Statistics and Mechanics exam is worth one-third and lasts 1 hour. Mechanics and Statistics are equally weighted on Paper 3. 

In year 13 you will take 3 equally weighted exams each 2 hours long. Paper 1 examines AS content and Paper 2 examines A Level content. Statistics and Mechanics have equal weight in Paper 3. 

A calculator may be used for all papers. Students must complete all assessments in May/June in any single year. 

Future opportunities

Maths is a versatile and challenging subject that has applications in manyn fields ranging from Accountancy to Zoology. It is obviously heavily used in Science, Computing and Engineering but it is also used in Psychology, Business Studies and Economics.
