Business Studies AS/A2 Level at Huish Episcopi Science College
Have you ever watched an advertisement and thought ‘I could do better’? Have you been frustrated at poor customer service in a shop? Do you fancy being the next Apprentice for Sir Alan Sugar? Or perhaps you aspire to be a successful entrepreneur? If so, then Business Studies is the course for you! Business Studies is not just about theory, it has a good balance of research and investigation with emphasis on group discussions and debates.
This allows you to develop and give your own views about the world of business. You will explore real business situations; in addition the course will aim to inspire you with external visits to local businesses. Guest speakers on key subject areas such as advertising and promotions will be invited into the Sixth Form to make presentations and give insight into the business world.
You will be introduced to the challenges and issues of starting a business, including financial planning. You will then explore the key internal functions of business and how the management of these functions can assist in improving the effectiveness and performance of a business.
You will consider strategies for larger businesses and how these strategies may change according to circumstances. Finally, you will consider the effects that external factors can have on businesses and how a business can plan for and manage change, including leadership style and change in business culture.
No previous Business or Economics qualification is necessary in order to start the course, however, there is a minimum entrance requirement of five grade C GCSEs.
Year AS: You will sit two exams, one lasting 75 minutes worth 20% and the other 90 minutes worth 30% of your total A level marks. A pass in year one is recognised with an AS level.
Year A2: You will sit two exams lasting 105 minutes each, worth 25% of your total A level marks. Extending your experience you will have the opportunity to work with local employers and take part in the Young Enterprise Scheme. There will also be visits to universities and national organisations to investigate business structure and organisation.
Business Studies is a popular choice and is suitable for both the student who does not yet feel committed
to a specific career but does ultimately envisage entering the industrial or commercial sector, as well as those who have already made the decision to enter the business world.
This course is provided for those students who wish to pursue a broad approach to business and commerce rather than specialise in a narrow discipline. It therefore combines well with almost all other A level courses.
