Course description

Course content

Physical/chemistry including atomic structure, amount of substance, bonding, energetics, kinetics, chemical equilibria and Le Chatelier
Inorganic chemistry including periodicity, group 2, and group 7.
Organic chemistry including alkanes, halogenoalkanes, alkenes, alcohols and synthesis
Physical chemistry :- Thermodynamics, rate equations, equilibrium constants, electrode potentials and electrochemical cells
Inorganic chemistry:- Period 3 elements and their oxides, transition metals, reactions of ions in solution
Organic chemistry :- optical isomers carbonyls and carboxylic acids, aromatics amines,
polymers, Amino Acids and DNA, synthesis, NMR + Chromatography

Assessment

A’Level: 6 hours written examination spread over 3 exam papers. Paper 1 and Paper 2
(105 marks each, 35% each of total A’ level mark) questions include long and short
answers. Paper 3, 90 marks, 30% of total grade (40 marks practical techniques (data
analysis). 30 marks multiple choice and 20 marks on any area of specification).
