Year 10

· Unit 1 - Investigate the Catering and Hospitality Industry (4 credits)

· Unit 2 - Products, Services and Support in the Hospitality Industry (1 credit)

· Unit 3 - Prepare, Cook and Finish Food (4 credits)

· Unit 4 - Healthier Food and Special Diets (1 credits)

· Unit 5 - The UK Travel and Tourism Sector (5 credits)


Year 11

· Unit 6 - Contemporary World Food (10 credits)

· Unit 7 - Principles of Customer Service in Hospitality, Leisure, Travel and Tourism (1 credit)

· Providing Customer Service in Hospitality (4 credits)

· Unit 8 - Providing Customer Service in Hospitality (4 credits)

The hospitality industry is large and varied, and able to respond to changing market needs by growing and evolving. In the first part of the unit pupils will explore the industry at both a national and a local level, gaining an insight into the size of the industry. Pupils will also differentiate between businesses operating solely in the hospitality arena and those offering a specialist catering service to industries that have other main activities.

By exploring all these aspects of the industry, pupils will develop an understanding of the industry both at a local and a national level.

Pupils will also have the opportunity to explore job roles available at different levels in the industry. They will start to look at the skills needed to work in the industry. Study of other units in the qualification will build on their understanding of different areas of work available and help them to make career choices.

Studying for the BTEC Level 2 Extended Certificate in Hospitality gives pupils the opportunity to broaden their knowledge and appreciation of the Hospitality Industry. This qualification was first introduced to provide education and training for pupils who are interested in a vocation in the hospitality industry. It builds upon skills and knowledge gained from Key Stage Three Design Technology Food and it puts them in a vocational context. This qualification is run over two years and pupils need to acquire thirty credits during this time.
