Theatrical, Special Effects, Hair and Media Make-up VTCT Level 3 Diploma at Guildford College

Course description

This course will prepare you work in the make-up industry as a professional make-up artist.

You will gain skills and knowledge in media make-up including applying small ready-made prosthetic pieces and bald caps, postiche, theatrical make-up airbrushing, fashion and photographic make-up, camouflage make-up, making and styling wigs and hair additions, face and body art.

This qualification is approved and supported by HABIA, the standard setting body for hair, beauty, nails and spa qualifications.

The course is delivered via theoretical and practical sessions using e-learning, text books, interactive learning, Q & A and practical demonstrations and peer work progressing to working on our external client base.

  • Monitor and maintain health and safety practice in the salon
  • Client care and communication in beauty related industries
  • Design and apply face and body art
  • Apply airbrush make-up to the face
  • Media make-up
  • Fashion and photographic make-up
  • Camouflage make-up
  • Style and fit postiche
  • Apply prosthetic pieces and bald caps
  • Make and style a hair addition

Entry requirements

You should have achieved a Level 2 Beauty Therapy, Make-up or Hairdressing qualification with a minimum Merit profile including successfully completing your work placement. You should also have a good attendance record. GCSE Art at grade C or above would be an advantage.

Students that are under 19 will be required to undertake GCSEs in English and Maths or Functional Skills if they have not already achieved a grade C.

Students will be required to attend 48 hours work placement. A 95% attendance is required in order to be able to achieve the qualification


Assessment is set, marked and internally verified to clearly demonstrate achievement of the learning outcomes. Assessment is sampled by VTCT external verifiers. Externally assessed question papers completed electronically will be set and marked by VTCT.

Future opportunities

Progression routes include VTCT specialist hair and beauty qualifications, available from the College, employment or self-employment as a professional make-up artist or progression to higher education.
