Level 2 Art & Design at ARK Putney
BTEC Firsts are QCF Level 2 qualifications designed to provide specialist work-related qualifications in a
range of sectors. They give learners the knowledge, understanding and skills that they need to prepare for
employment. The qualifications also provide career development opportunities for those already in work.
Consequently they provide a course of study for full-time or part-time learners in schools, colleges and
BTEC Firsts provide much of the underpinning knowledge and understanding for the National Occupational
Standards for the sector, where these are appropriate. They are supported by the relevant Standards Setting
Body (SSB) or Sector Skills Council (SSC). A number of BTEC Firsts are recognised as Technical Certificates
and form part of the Apprenticeship Framework. They attract achievement and attainment points that equate
to similar-sized general qualifications.
On successful completion of a BTEC First qualification, learners can progress to or within employment and/or
continue their study in the same, or related vocational area.
It should be noted that the titling conventions for the revised QCF versions of the BTEC Nationals have also
changed; see within the relevant BTEC National specifications on the website (www.edexcel.com).
The QCF is a framework which awards credit for qualifications and units and aims to present qualifications in
a way that is easy to understand and measure. It enables learners to gain qualifications at their own pace along
There are three sizes of qualifications in the QCF:
Awards (1 to 12 credits)
Certificates (13 to 36 credits)
Diplomas (37 credits and above).
For level 2 courses students will typically have grades D and E at GCSE, or pass grades at level 2.
Where the subject chosen has not been previously studied, English and Maths grades will be considered.
