Fitness Instructing (Gym Based Exercise) VTCT Level 2 Certificate at Heysham High School Sports College
This course will prepare students for a career in the sport and active leisure industry as a fitness instructor - teaching gym based exercise.
Students will develop an understanding of:
- anatomy and physiology;
- principles of exercise;
- fitness and health;
- health, safety and welfare in the fitness environment.
Students will also develop the skills and knowledge needed to plan and instruct gym based exercise programmes for healthy adults of all ages. They will also learn to effectively support clients who take part in exercise and physical activity.
A good level of literacy is required to be able to complete the coursework involved in this subject as well as a willingness to learn, good attendance and the ability to work with external clients.
GCSE Science at Grade C is preferred but not essential.
This is a one year qualification, in which you will have two external examination papers, four internally assessed assignments and several practical assessments. You will be required to produce a portfolio of evidence.
Folders and other stationery are needed to ensure work is organised. All texts which are studied for the course are provided. Access to the internet at home or at school is essential.
On the successful completion of this qualification, students will be able to plan and instruct gym based exercise to healthy adults of all ages.
This qualification is approved by the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs). Upon successful completion, students will be eligible to register onto the REPs as a Level 2 Fitness Instructor (gym-based exercise).
Students will also be able to progress onto the Level 3 Certificate in Personal Training or gain employment in a gym.
