Art and Design A and AS level at The Heathland School

Course description

The subject of Art Craft and Design provides opportunities for students to become visually and aesthetically literate. Students will embark on a broad-based course exploring practical, critical and contextual work through a range of 2D and or 3D processes and media. The course encourages students to work independently and create their visual ideas. You will be able to choose a specialist area of study that suits your individual interest and abilities.

Course content

AS Units


  • Component 1: A portfolio of work based on 4 art workshops with an extended assignment in the students chosen media. (60%).
  • Component 2: Externally set examination assignment.  10 hours (40%).

A Level  Units


  • Component 1: Personal Investigation and independent portfolio, accompanied with a 1000-3000 word essay. (60%).
  • Component 2: Externally set examination assignment.  10 hours (40%).

Entry requirements

Students must attain at least 5 A*-C grades including English Language and Mathematics and a total point score of 42+  in the student’s best 8 subjects to follow this course, as well as a GCSE in Art and Design at C or above.
