Mathematical Studies - Level 3 Certificate at Barrow-in-Furness Sixth Form College

Course description

Mathematical studies is a one-year Level 3 course that is designed to encourage students to study mathematics beyond GCSE level.

This course will improve your confidence in maths and will support the study of other subjects where maths is used such as science, geography and business.

It will enable you to continue to make calculations confidently and solve problems in real-life situations

You will learn about finance, cost benefit analysis and the critical paths of projects – skills many employers value. Mathematical studies is a great way to continue improving your maths and is worth UCAS points in the same way as an AS qualification.

Entry requirements

Grade C or better in GCSE Maths and either: grade A* or A in GCSE English, plus at least 3 other C grades or better at GCSE or: grade B in GCSE English, with an average GCSE score of 5.2 or better from at least 5 GCSEs or: grade C in GCSE English, with an average GCSE score of 5.5 or better from at least 5 GCSEs.

To study mathematical studies, you will need to have a grade C or better in GCSE mathematics, in addition to the general entry requirements.

    • 1. Leave the M6 at Junction 36 and follow signs for the A590 and Barrow (33 miles).
      2. After 25 miles pass through Ulverston and then the villages of Swarthmoor and Lindal.
      3. At the third roundabout after this take the first exit, signposted Furness General Hospital and Furness Abbey.
      4. At the next roundabout take the second exit.
      5. Pass Abbey House Hotel on the left and take the first turning on the left into Rating Lane.
      6. The College is 400 yards down Rating Lane on the left hand side.
