English Language AS and A Level at Queen Elizabeth Grammar School Penrith

Course description

This course very much focuses on the analysis of language and helps students to develop their linguistic skills and knowledge. There is also a creative writing element, which provides students with the opportunity to produce and develop their own work. The main emphasis, however, is to equip students with the tools to de-construct how language is used in a variety of real life contexts.

The A level course divides into studying both spoken and written English in a range of contexts. In the Spoken English course, you will focus on the media and learn how to transcribe and analyse interactions such as news interviews or radio and television adverts.
In the Written English course, you will study different genres and try your hand at the demands of writing in different styles. Underpinning both studies is a core course of Language Analysis covering aspects of texts such as: purpose, audience, mode, vocabulary, grammar, text structures, phonology and graphology.


Course content

Component 1: Language Concepts and Issues Written examination: 2 hours
30% of qualification. Section A: Analysis of spoken language. One question requiring analysis of at least two transcriptions. Section B: Language issues. One question from a choice of three based on the study of four topic areas.

Component 2: Language Change Over Time. Written examination: 2 hours 15 minutes. 30% of qualification. Section A: Language change over time
One multi-part question and one essay question analysing language over time.
Section B: English in the twenty-first century. On question based on the ways language is used in the twenty-first century

Component 3: Creative and Critical Use of Language. Written examination: 1 hours 45 minutes. 20% of qualification. One question from a choice of two, requiring two
original writing responses and one commentary

Component 4: Language and Identity. Coursework: 2500-3500 words. 20% of qualification. 2500-3500 word language investigation based on the study and research of a topic related to language and identity. Learners are required to choose a topic from the following list: language and self-representation; language and gender; language and culture; or language diversity.

Entry requirements

We would normally expect you to have achieved at least a grade B at GCSE to be able to study this course.

    • The school was founded by Royal Charter in 1564. It was formerly situated in the centre of Penrith near St. Andrew's Church, but moved to the new buildings on its present site in 1915. The main school was extended in 1937 and 1958. The Donald Fay Memorial Building consisting of four Technology rooms and two Information Technology rooms was completed by September 1995 and a new building providing six Science laboratories, four Mathematics rooms and another Technology room was opened in July 1998. In November 2001, the Peter Kremer Sports Hall and four English rooms were completed. Further building work in 2004, 2009 and 2014 has provided additional office space and four classrooms. The extensive playing fields are adjacent to the school.
