Media Studies A-Level at Priestley College

Course description

Listening to music, watching television, browsing the internet, receiving texts on your mobile phone – wherever you go and whatever you do, you can’t escape the media.  Media industries are amongst the biggest in the world and are most people’s source of entertainment and information. Media Studies has become one of the fastest growing subjects in recent years.  If you have a strong curiosity about all aspects of media, then this is the course for you.

Course content

Exam boards are currently finalising the specifications for the new A Level for first teaching in 2017. At the time of print, the full details of the units are not yet available but what we do know is that throughout the course you will study:

  • television
  • film
  • radio
  • newspapers
  • magazines
  • advertising and marketing
  • online, social and participatory media
  • video games
  • music video

You will analyse media texts to establish how meaning is created and how representations are created.  You will also study the industries which produce the texts and the production practices they use; as well as audiences and how the media target specific audiences but how the audience can also create their own media.

The coursework will allow you to put into practice what you have learnt through the creation of a cross media production involving audio visual, print and web site construction.

Entry requirements

As a student of Media you will work as part of a small group, as well as being able to work independently. You will also be expected to work to strict deadlines, which is the case in any media industry.

Our minimum entry requirements remain 5 GCSEs at grade C or above, however there are now a number of restrictions on the type/range of programmes you can take at Priestley which will reflect your overall GCSE grade profile.

If you do not have a GCSE Grade 4 or the old Grade C in English Language and/or Mathematics by the time you join Priestley you will be required to continue working to improve in these subjects so you may find your programme options more limited.

70% exam.

Future opportunities

There are numerous degrees to choose from in all aspects of the media. However, if you decide not to pursue the subject to degree level, the course is excellent preparation for other degrees, in terms of methods of study and learning used throughout the course. Both will be of benefit to you whichever course you choose to follow. There are also countless opportunities in many industries where skills you develop will be greatly appreciated.

Further information

Many of our Media students choose to be involved in the College radio station – Radio Wave – creating weekly shows. Students have also attended workshops in London with the BBFC and the BBC. Media students will also have the opportunity to take a residential visit to New York.
