Chemistry A Level at Newent Community School and SIxth Form Centre

Course description

The Chemistry AS and A level courses use innovative approaches to teaching and learning Advanced Chemistry. Important chemical ideas and principles are introduced gradually, rather than all at one go.

The ‘drip-feed’ approach to teaching and learning enables students to revisit a particular topic several times during the course, each time taking their knowledge and understanding a step further.

The courses are practical and very ‘applied’. Examples of Chemistry’s influence on our lives are discussed and form the starting point to develop chemical principles.

Entry requirements

The AS and A level courses build on grade BB in GCSE Science Double Award or a B in GCSE Chemistry, and grade C in GCSE Maths. These qualifications should be seen as essential for progression to Advanced Level courses. GCSE Chemistry will provide for an easier transition to AS Level.

Future opportunities

Advanced Chemistry is regarded highly, as an academic subject, by universities and is an essential requirement of many science- based courses, such as Medicine and Veterinary Science.
