German A Level at Dronfield Henry Fanshawe School
You will build upon the topics that you studied at GCSE but the onus is now upon you to argue and debate your own point of view. You will read materials from the German press, watch German TV and DVDs, listen to German podcasts and use the internet. Grammar is taught in a discrete lesson once a week.
AS Level - two modules based on the topics of ‘Travel and Exploration’ and ‘Contemporary French Society’
A2 Level – AS modules plus two further modules based on ‘Diversity and Difference’ and ‘The making of modern Germany: 1989 onwards’
There will be the opportunity to visit Germany during the two year course.
This is a two year A Level course. At the end of Year 13 there are three exams.
Unit 1 (30%) Oral exam of between 21 and 23 minutes with an external examiner, in which you will discuss your chosen research project and discuss one of the themes studied.
Unit 2: (50%) Listening, Reading and Translation, a two and a half hour paper which is worth 50%
Unit 3: (20%) Critical and Analytical response in Writing, a two hour paper consisting of two essays, one on a film and one on a book studied during the course.
At the end of Year 12 there is the AS examination which is a stand-alone qualification and for which there are three examined units which follow the same format as for A Level, but which are shorter.
