Media Studies at Ysgol Gyfun Dyffryn Teifi

Course description

This is a new, modern course which offers many opportunities. The course builds on the knowledge, understanding and skills learnt in GCSE Media Studies. You will study three linked units which will extend and develop what has been acquired already. You will study the subject in greater depth and breadth than GCSE, and there will be greater opportunities for analysis, personal research and a deeper knowledge of media forms and production work. The AS Media Studies offer many opportunities to develop the key skills, and is suitable for those of you who are looking for a broad based set of qualifications. After all the Media is the country’s main employer.

Course content

Students will be expected to demonstrate:
 their ability to examine a media text in detail, employing appropriate analytical tools
and language
 an understanding that texts are constructed
 an understanding of how social/cultural groups, events and issues are represented in media texts
 an understanding of how audiences respond to and interpret texts.

Students are required to demonstrate:
 their ability to research and plan for a media production
 their ability to produce a technically competent media production
 their ability to evaluate their own production work
This will be done through the submission of three linked pieces of work. These will comprise:-
examine a media text in
 a pre-production reflecting research and demonstrating planning techniques
 a production which has developed out of the pre-production
 a report between 1200-1600 words

Students are required to demonstrate:
 individual and independent research skills
 the ability to use their research to inform a media product
 technical and creative skills
 the ability to evaluate the product exploring the validity of the research undertaken
Students will submit three pieces of linked work comprising:
 a research investigation focused on one or more of the following concepts: genre,
narrative, representation (1400-1800 words)
 a production which arises out of the research
 an evaluation which explains how the research has informed the production
(500-750 words)

MS4 - MEDIA - Text, Industry and Audience
This unit focuses on developing both the knowledge students have gained in other areas of the course and their understanding on the links between texts, the industries that have produced them and the different audiences that respond to them.

Future opportunities

How important is the subject for the future?
Very important, because the subject offers many openings, e.g. television work, be it presenting or producing, or journalism and many other occupations.
A modern and interesting subject that offers a window for life.
The above two out of four units will be achieved in year 12 in order to gain a qualification in AS Media Studies.
