Art AS Level at Ashfield School

Course description

Art is a subject that develops creative and analytical thinking skills alongside practical visual communication techniques. You will develop skills, techniques and processes across a wide range of material areas. You will also learn how to analyse, evaluate and respond to the work of other artists.

Course content

Component 1 (60%) Coursework. This is an introduction to a variety of experiences exploring a range of art techniques, analysis and evaluation. A six week skills workshop will lead into a themed project of your choosing, developing ideas and use of materials. There will be a focus on improving observational skills to a high standard alongside evaluating and analysing the work of other artists.

Component 2 (40%) Examination. The exam takes the form of an externally set assignment ending in 10 hours of unaided work.

Entry requirements

A GCSE equivalent to five passes at grade 6 or above (including English) or other related Level 2 qualifications OR by interview.

Future opportunities

All AS/A Level Art courses can lead into higher education at college or university or into employment. Career prospects include: teaching, graphic design, fine art, film and TV design, fashion design, advertising, Computer Game design.
