Countryside and Wildlife Management EDEXCEL BTEC Extended Diploma Level 3 at Duchy College

Course description

This course is for anyone wishing to pursue a career in Conservation, Game management, Forestry, Estate and landscape management, River conservation, Sustainable development, Waste management, Coastal and Wildlife management, all roles within the environmental and countryside sector.

Course content

You will gain a working knowledge and understanding of the fundamental principles of a range of topics such as  ecological surveys, related conservation practises. Coastal management, Gamekeeping Livestock Conservation, Farm Habitats, Forestry Estate maintenance, Greenwood work, Forest recreation and Environmental interpretation. Field trips are a common part of this applied course and there are opportunities to study as a group in other parts of the country.

You will have the opportunity to gain competence certificates such as strimmer and Chainsaw. You will gain a range of practical skills on the college estate and with organisations such as the Wildlife trust, Cornwall and Tamar Valley AONB, Cornwall County Council. Environment agency, SW Rivers Trust, SW Lakes Trust and District Councils.  

Every student will need to complete an Industrial work placement within the rural sector. The course is designed to give students transferable skills in communication, working as part of a team , initiative, adaptability, developing confidence and employability. 

Learners have the opportunity to work with voluntary organisations in the UK and in Germany, Cyprus, Finland, Czech Republic, Slovakia and Iceland, placements are funded by the Leonardo Da Vinci scheme where each country concentrates on their own objectives, which are environmentally based.

Entry requirements

You will need to be at least 16 years old and to have 5 GCSEs at Grade C or above, including Maths, English and Science. Or have completed a BTEC Level 2 Diploma or the City & Guilds National Certificate in Countryside and the Environment with units at merit and two distinctions.

Future opportunities

You can progress onto a Foundation Degree in Estate and farm enterprise management (subject to approval), Conservation & Countryside Management. Alternatively you can seek employment on an Advanced Modern Apprenticeship with a range of employers.
