Mathematics at Highdown School and Sixth Form Centre

Course description

AS Mathematics consists of 3 modules.

Modules MPC1 and MPC2 (Core 1 and 2) are compulsory. In addition we will offer three of the optional units and students may choose to study either MM1B (Mechanics 1B), MS1B (Statistics 1B) or Module D1 (Decision 1). The main focus of the Pure Mathematics units is Algebra, Geometry and Calculus.

A full A Level in mathematics can be obtained by studying a further three modules in the second year of the Sixth Form. As with AS Level Mathematics there are two compulsory modules (Pure Core 3 and Pure Core 4). Candidates study a second applied unit (M1, S1 or D1) not studied at AS, or continue to specialise with M2, S2 or D2.

Entry requirements

AS/A2 Mathematics builds on the geometry and Algebra studied at GCSE. Knowledge of Algebra and Trigonometry is essential and students must have studied the higher tier at GCSE to enable them to fully access this course. In order to study AS Level mathematics, students are expected to have achieved at least Grade B in GCSE.
