Childcare and Education Level 2 Diploma at Cramlington Learning Village

Course description

This is a very practical course which gives you the opportunity to learn about how children develop from birth to 7 years. It really is all about children! You will spend two days a week at a local childcare setting working with young children. This helps you to develop the skills you need to work well with young children. Whilst you are at the setting you will be assessed on how well you work with the children. The rest of the week will be spent learning about how young children develop and learn and how you can meet their needs. You will also learn about how to develop your professional skills and this will help you in a future career in Childcare.

Course content

You will study a number of different units that cover 5 different themes. These are:
The role of the early years practitioner
Legislation and professional practice
Play, development and learning for school
Professional development
Supporting healthy lifestyles for children

Students will also resit English and Maths GCSE if required.

Entry requirements

5 A* - G GCSEs across a range of subjects.


Over the course you will build up a portfolio of your work. You will complete a number of assignments and tasks. Through your work placement you will be assessed on the skills you demonstrate. You need to pass all of the units to achieve this course and your attendance should be over 80%.

Future opportunities

This course can lead to working with young children. On successful completion of this course you could apply for a job as a:

- Pre-school assistant
- Crèche assistant
- Parent/Toddler group assistant

You can also choose to study a level 3 in Childcare at college and this will allow you to apply for a job as a nursery assistant or classroom assistant. After achieving the level 3 qualification you may be able to study a Childcare related course at university
