International Baccalaureate - Languages Higher/Standard Level at The Rochester Grammar School
French / German / Spanish
Studying a language as part of your IB course will not only widen your understanding of the culture of other countries, but will also build your confidence in your ability to communicate effectively in a variety of situations. Learning a Language B subject will provide an opportunity for enjoyment, creativity and intellectual stimulation. Indeed, the language component of the IB is recognised by universities all over the world. You may study two languages, if you wish, by taking one from Group 2 and the other as a free elective
GCSE Grade 7 in the Language to be studied is required.
You must select a language at Higher Level. You may choose from French, German or Spanish.
In order to gain access to The RGS Sixth Form, students must obtain 5 GCSE grades at 9-6 (A*-B) including English Language and Mathematics.
See prospectus for full details.
In a multicultural society, and a world where travel and multinational companies are increasingly important, linguistic skills are invaluable. There are many careers available for linguists in the business world and hospitality industries, where translators, interpreters, bi- or trilingual secretaries are in increasing demand. Journalism and teaching are also natural career options. A language is a useful subsidiary subject to pursue at degree level, often offering the option of a year studying abroad
The I.B.O.s mission statement:
'The aim of all IB programmes is to develop internationally minded people who, recognising their common humanity and shared guardianship of the planet, help to create a better and more peaceful world.'
IB learners are:
- Good communicators
The ideal IB student will also have acquired a sense of caring and compassion, and will recognise the importance of a balance between his/her intellectual, physical and emotional needs.
