GCSE Science (Additional) at Acland Burghley School
Science: Additional Requirements: NC level 5 or better. In the future, after completing Core Science and Additional Science courses you can go onto study Science A level courses. An A level in Science is necessary for university entry into science related courses. This can lead to careers in Electronics, Aerospace, Forensics, Health-care and Medicine, Engineering, the Oil and Chemical Industry or Environmental Science. What skills will I develop? Additional Science GCSE: A concept-led course developed to meet the needs of candidates seeking a deeper understanding of basic scientific ideas. Focusing on scientific explanations models, it gives candidates an insight into how scientists develop scientific understanding of themselves, and the world around them. What will I be studying? The content is based on a set of Science Explanations and Skills. There are 18 modules over two years. The modules include: You and Your Genes, Air Quality, The Earth in the Universe, Keeping Healthy, Material Choices, Radiation and Life, Life on Earth, Food Matters , Radioactive Materials, Chemical Patterns, Explaining Motion, Growth and Development, Chemicals of the Natural Environment, Electric Circuits, Brain and Mind, Chemical Synthesis and the Wave Model of Radiation. The course structure The course will be presented in a linear fashion, where students learn topics from Core Science in Year 10 and Additional Science in Year 11. The course is taught by two teachers, and each teaches their specialised field. Practical work is included in each module and contributes towards coursework components. How will I be assessed? The final GCSE grades are awarded separately for the Core Science and the Additional Science course. The final GCSE grades will depend on student performance in the exams and coursework components. Exams: 4 exams in total plus coursework. 3 exams are 40 minutes long and worth 16.7%, and 1 is 45 minutes long and worth 16.7%.
