Sport BTEC Level 3 at Wyke Sixth Form College

Course description

This course specialises in coaching, sports development, fitness and health. It is suitable for students who are aiming to go on to university and study a sports related degree or progress onto higher training apprenticeships; those looking to get into PE teaching, to gain employment within the Leisure and Recreation Industry including Leisure Centre Management, Sports Coaching, Fitness Instructor, Physiotherapy, Sports Science and Sports Retail; or those looking to enter the Uniformed Services.

Students will also receive support and guidance to help them complete additional qualifications such as; Sports Leaders Award (UCAS), Extended Project Qualification (UCAS) , Coaching qualifications, First Aid, Gym Instructing L1/2 (UCAS), National Pool Lifeguarding Qualification as well as over 100 hours work experience in a chosen sector. 

Course content

BTEC Level 3 in Sport is available in three forms:

1. BTEC Level 3 Certificate (0.5 A Level Equivalent, Elective choice)

2. BTEC Level 3 Extended Certificate (A Level Equivalent)

3. BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma (3 x A Level Equivalent)


The BTEC Level 3 Certificate has two units: One year elective course

- Principles of Anatomy and Physiology in Sport (External assessment)

- Practical Sports Performance


The BTEC Level 3 Extended Certificate in Sport has four units: Two year course

- Principles of Anatomy and Physiology in Sport (External assessment)

- Fitness training and programming (External assessment)

- Professional development in the Sports Industry

- Application of Fitness Testing


The BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport: Two Year Course

- includes the above units plus:

- Sports Psychology

- Technical and Tactical Skills in Sport

- The athlete’s Lifestyle

- Sports Injuries

- Analysis of Sports Performance

- Sport and Exercise Massage

- Practical Team Sports

- Development and Provision of Sport and Physical Activity (External assessment)

- Rules, Regulations and Officiating in Sport

- Organising Sports Events

- Sport as a Business

Entry requirements

GCSE PE or BTEC Level 2 is desirable but not essential.


Each unit is assessed through coursework submissions ranging from role plays, reports, presentations, documentaries, practical performance and log books. A small number of units are assessed externally through an online assessment.
