Course description

Why should I study Food Technology? Food Technology AS and A Level is an exciting new course which is aimed at developing students’ design and technology skills alongside introducing food science and manufacturing knowledge.

If you are interested in studying for a career within Food Technology, such as new product development, food management marketing or manufacturing, or similarly, if you have a real passion for cooking and may be interested in future careers in catering, nutrition and dietetics, food consulting or even teaching, then this course is for you. Students are encouraged to become independent in research, skilful and creative in practical and experimental work and develop confidence and skills that are invaluable in both higher education and employment.

Course content

What will I do during the course?

The course will involve students investigating existing products and looking in detail at the ingredients used and their functions, designing their own new products and investigating product manufacture and large scale mass production.

Entry requirements

Students wishing to do Food Technology A Level should have studied Food Technology at GCSE and gained a Grade B or above. Combining this subject with Chemistry or Biology would be an advantage but not essential.


How will I be assessed?

The course is spilt into 60% coursework which is made up of 3 elements: product investigation, product design and product manufacture, and 40% exam. The examination will be based around such things as macro nutrients, preservation, food hygiene and poisoning as well as incorporating questions on manufacturing and processing techniques.

Food Technology is an ideal subject for those students wishing to pursue a career in the food industry, catering or teaching Food Technology. It is important to stress the level of theory especially food science which is heavily chemistry based. Food is a highly competitive and challenging industry offering a wealth of employment opportunities. A qualification in Food Technology provides a valuable pathway to Higher Education for those who wish to study the subject at this level.
