Business BTEC Level 3 Nationals at St Thomas More Catholic School

Course description

These qualifications are for post-16 learners who want to continue their education through applied learning. The qualification prepares learners for a range of higher education courses and job roles related to Business.

You will use a variety of skills such as reading, note taking, discussions and researching. Investigations into real businesses will be essential for some units. You will need to complete all units to achieve your qualification.

Course content

You will study 4 units over 2 years. Each unit will focus on a specific area of Business.

All BTEC Nationals provide transferable knowledge and skills that prepare learners for progression to university or the workplace. This includes the ability to learn independently, research actively and methodically, to give presentations and be active group members. BTEC Nationals are excellent preparation for assessment methods used in university degrees.

Entry requirements

Anyone who has achieved 5 or more GCSE passes at Grade A-C. This is a vocationally related qualification and an alternative to traditional A levels.


Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Business

Each BTEC Nationals unit is individually graded (Pass, Merit, Distinction) and contributes towards a learner’s final qualification grade.

BTEC Nationals use three types of assessment:

  • Assignments: Assignments can include research, projects, investigations, fieldwork, and experiments, and often link theory with practical exercises.
  • Tasks: Students are provided with a case study two weeks before being assessed during a three hour supervised period.
  • Examinations: Students are required to sit a two hour exam that has 100 marks available, the exam is split into 2 sections.

Future opportunities

Students completing their BTEC Nationals in Business will be aiming to go on to employment, often via the stepping stone of higher education.
