Mathematics at Hillview School for Girls
The Mathematics A Level course covers Pure Mathematics and Applied Mathematics. The syllabus is divided in a simple 2:1 ratio of pure to applied content.
The Pure Mathematics elements of the course include algebra, geometry, calculus, series and trigonometry. The Applied Mathematics elements are split between Statistics and Mechanics. Statistics is the study of the collection, presentation and analysis of data. Mechanics is a study of the mathematics of movement, including Newton’s laws of motions, the formulae concerned with acceleration, velocity and displacement, vectors and force diagrams. It will be examined through three examination papers at the end of Year 13. There will be two Pure Mathematics papers and one Applied Mathematics paper.
Academic entry requirements to study Level 3 qualifications at Hillview Sixth Form are Grade 4 or above in both English (Language or Literature) and Maths and in 3 other GCSE subject plus an average GCSE point score of 4.25 or above.
Subject Specific Criteria:
Grade 7 or higher in GCSE Mathematics with an APS of 4.75 or above.
Maths is fundamental for a wide variety of Higher Education courses and careers. Maths is essential if you wish to study Maths or Engineering and is advisable for Economics, Business, Computing, I.T. and Sciences. Maths is also very much welcomed for Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Science and Architecture.
Maths combines well with most other subjects, particularly the Sciences, Social Sciences, Business Studies and Computer Science.
