AS/A2 Chemistry at Durham High School For Girls

Course description

The subject matter of the course includes Atomic Structure, Bonding and Structure, Thermochemistry, Rates of Reaction, Organic Chemistry, the Periodic Table, Equilibria, and Electrochemistry. Wherever possible, the theoretical work is supported by practical work in the laboratory, usually a double period a week.

Entry requirements

At least grade B at GCSE in Chemistry or Dual Award Science is desirable. The course develops at greater depth some of the topics which have been touched upon only superficially in the GCSE course. Most students find this both challenging and stimulating, and derive much benefit from the intellectual demands made on them in developing their powers of thought.

Chemistry is also, of course, a necessary qualification for candidates wishing to study Medicine, Veterinary Science, Pharmacy, and Dentistry, for which high grades are nearly always required. Indeed, there are very many opportunities in the world of industry, commerce, or education, for people with a Chemistry qualification. You could take this course with other advanced level courses, which overlap with Chemistry such as Biology, Applied Science, Physics, Geography, Geology or more general subjects that may not relate to the sciences, to prepare for higher education.
