A Level Law at The Boswells School

Course description

We follow the AQA specification.
At A/S level we study 2 modules, both of which are examined by a 90 minute paper.

Unit 1 looks at The English Legal System, this includes topics such as Juries, Judges, Magistrates, Solicitors and Barristers. We consider how laws are made both by judges.

For Unit 2 we study an introduction to Criminal Law, including ABH and GBH. Tort Law is also studied, looking at Negligence.

At A2 level we study 2 papers, unit 3 is a 90 minute examination and unit 4 is a 2 hour examination.

For Unit 3 we study Criminal Law looking at topics such as Murder and Manslaughter. We consider defences such as insanity, self defence and intoxication. We encourage students to adopt a critical approach to analysing the law.

For Unit 4 we study Tort Law looking at areas such as Negligence, Psychiatric harm, Nuisance, and Occupiers Liability. Scenarios will often involve noisy and smelly neighbours or explosions. Students will also write an essay on an argumentative topic such as the Law and Morality. Here students are encouraged to construct their own argument on whether we should have laws making prostitution illegal for example.
