Geography A-Level at DSLV E-ACT Academy

Course description

The world and the people in it are changing more rapidly than ever before. Geography is about where you fit into these changes. You will investigate and think about the challenges and opportunities involved. For example where, when and why does a hazard turn into a natural disaster? Topics such as multiple hazard hotspots are investigated by thinking about meaning, causes, impacts and management. The course is relevant to all students including those who have not studied geography at GCSE. By investigating people you will think about and make links between our globalised shopping and escalating population migration. Geography allows you to investigate topics such as extreme weather which fascinates some people and threatens many others. ‘Rebranding places’ is a topic that focuses on how we need to reimage and regenerate places ranging in scale from Daventry town centre to Birmingham. In Year 13 the course has topic headings such as ‘Superpower Geographies’ and ‘Tectonic Activity and Hazards’. The geography of power and international influence can be seen through geographical patterns of military reach, trade and cultural dominance. The causes, physical and human effects and responses to tectonic activity are examined through a synoptic exam. Geography links with most other A level subjects because of its ways of thinking and range of topics. The course is an excellent preparation for degree level study of geography or applied subjects. Employers know that geographers are practiced at thinking, decision making and evaluating. Statistics show that geography graduates are among the most employable. Over a third goes into management and administration. 12% go into the financial sector and 11% enter retail leadership. The faster the world changes the more relevant geography becomes. This course guides you through the present and the future in a stimulating and challenging way.
