Music A Level at Brimsham Green School

Course description

The course will enable you to further explore the key areas of music through the study of harmony and composition, performance, and the history of music through set works.

This will give you an in-depth knowledge of the development and construction of music whilst also allowing you to work to your areas of strength in both composition and performance.

This course will be taught through a mixture of techniques such as practical listening exercises and performance opportunities. Analysis work will involve working with written notes and looking at musical scores and harmony exercises, whilst practising the techniques learned in class

Course content

A2 (2 years)

Unit 1: Performing Music

Unit 2: Composing Music

Unit 3: Developing Musical Understanding

Section A: Listening

Section B: Investigating musical styles

Section C: Understanding chords and lines.


Unit 1: Performing Music 30% - Solo performance lasting approximately 8+minutes, grade 6 standard or above.

Unit 2: Composing Music 30% -2 compositions from a brief and one area of study.

Unit 3: Developing Musical Understanding 40% - 2 hour examination:

Section A: Listening, Section B: Investigating musical styles, Section C: Understanding chords and lines.


Unit 1 Performing: Recital

Unit 2 Composition: 2 complete pieces

Unit 3 Appraising: Examination in May/June of the second year

Future opportunities

Music is a highly regarded choice as an A-level course for all university degrees.

As a progression route in itself, Music can lead onto further studies such as a performer, composer, musical director, arts management, education, business and media.
