Art & Design: Photography AQA AS and A Level at Larkmead School
This is a subject which is now a reformed A level which means that the result of the AS exams does not contribute to the overall A level mark and grade. If a student leaves the course after AS then this new type of AS is worth 40% of the UCAS points of the full A level for University entry in 2017 and beyond. If a student completes the two year A level course then it is only assessment at the end of the second year that counts towards the full A level grade.
Unit 1 Coursework (60%):
Coursework unit comprises of internally set broad project themes that students explore, experiment, develop and refine towards finished outcomes. Preparatory studies Students should use sketchbooks/workbooks/journals to underpin their work where appropriate. Students may use traditional methods and/or digital techniques to produce images presented in sketchbooks or design sheets.
Unit 2 Exam (40%):
The externally set assignment is issued 6-8 weeks in advance of the timed test (practical - 10 hrs) giving time to plan and prepare a visual response to the set theme.
Unit 3 Coursework (60%):
Coursework unit comprises of personal project investigation that students explore, experiment, develop and refine towards finished outcomes. Preparatory studies are presented in sketchbooks / work books/ journals/design sheets. An extended written assignment where students profile their own work and ideas alongside artists’ work is also required.
Unit 4 Exam (40%):
The externally set assignment is issued 6-8 weeks in advance of the timed test (practical - 15 hrs) giving time to plan and prepare a visual response to the set theme.
How you will learn (investigations, course work etc.):
Personal research, experimentation & development of ideas Coverage of two or more of the following:
- Landscape photography (working from the urban, rural and/or coastal environment)
- Still life photography (working from objects or from the natural world)
- Documentary photography, photojournalism
- Fashion photography
- Experimental imagery
- Photographic installation
- Moving image (video, film, animation)
- Photography theory and history)
- Site visits, exhibition, gallery and museum visits
Skills you will need:
- Independent learning and self-organisation
- Self-motivation & discipline
- Problem solving, reviewing and modifying skills
- Good observation skills & critical analysis skills.
- You will need access to a digital SLR
To study AS/A Levels you will normally need: A minimum of 5 GCSEs at Grade C or above.
AS and A2:
Both courses are taught across 4 assessment objectives (equal in weighting) that measures success against research, development, experimentation & investigation, refinement and making. All units are internally marked and externally moderated
Career opportunities for Photography graduates include, film, television, conservation, theatre design, graphic design, marketing, fashion, teaching and museum education.
