Course description

Progression from a workbased level 2 NVQ Apprenticeship that can lead to a level 3 NVQ qualification and onto employment as a Light Vehicle Technician for applicants who successfully complete the course.

Course content

The main emphasis of the programme will be about developing the learners diagnostic skills in relation to vehicle system fault finding on the following vehicle systems:

Engines, electrical, transmission, brakes, steering, suspension.

Entry requirements

No pre-entry requirements but normally candidates will have completed a level 2 apprenticeship first.


Assessment is by a combination ofproducing portfolio evidence of jobs completed at work.

Observation by a qualified Assessor.

Web based assessment by multi-choice questions.

Financial information

For apprentices aged 16 to 25 the cost would normally be paid by the Learning and Skills Council (LSC).

Progression intofull time employment as a Vehicle Technicianthat maylead to workshop Controller / Supervisor position..

Further information

Most recruitment onto the course is carried out between July and September each year, but this is a rolling programme and learners may join at any time of the year.

The course is an Apprenticeship based on 4 days per week in a motor vehicle repair company and 1 day per week attendance atour Training Centre.

The full qualification consists of the NVQ certification that is about proving your competence in industry, aDiploma that checks your knowledge and Key Skills communication, application of number and ICT.
