Sociology A Level at Haydon Bridge Community High School and Sports College

Course description

This is an exciting and challenging subject that invites you to look at things that you probably take for granted from a different angle. Sociology seeks to explain the nature of the social world. It looks at class, gender and ethnicity and tries to identify the way society works. What is feminism? Why do 62 people own half the world’s resources? What does education really teach you; valuable skills and attitudes or are you being brainwashed into a mindless drone? If you enjoy looking at things from different perspectives, have an inquisitive mind and like keeping up with current affairs then sociology could be for you.

Entry requirements

5 GCSE grades at A* - C (or equivalent).

Assessment

At A-level there are three exams, each account for one third of your A-level grade. The three exams last 2 hours and are worth 80 marks each. The exams consist of a mixture of short answer and extended writing questions. These will be taken at the end of year 13.
