DANCE at Steyning Grammar School

Course description

The AS level is composed of one externally set exam and two practical assessments.

  • Theory (Understanding Dance)
    This covers the dancer as a performer, the process and craft of choreography, and the significance of dances.
  • Practical
    Candidates will demonstrate their choreography skills by composing a solo dance. Students will also be assessed on their presentation of this component. Candidates will additionally be assessed on their performance skills in a duo or trio dance set by the teacher.

    The A2 level is composed of one externally set exam and two practical assessments

  • Theory (Dance Appreciation)
    Candidates will study one genre of dance in relation to stylistic features, practitioners, history, culture and society. Pupils will also study a professional dance work that is set by the exam board.

    Candidates continue to develop their compositional abilities by choreographing a group piece. In addition, pupils will expand their technical and performance skills further by presenting a solo piece in the style of a practitioner they have studied. This component is set by the teacher.

  • Entry requirements

    AS Level - Grades A* - B at GCSE Dance are preferred, others will be considered if relevant dance experience is attained.
