French GCSE (WJEC) at Ryburn Valley High School
You are tested in the four main skill areas of listening, speaking, reading and writing. The written coursework tests are on-going throughout Years 10 and 11. All skill areas carry 25% and are therefore equally important. There is a Higher and Foundation Tier in each of these skills and you can be entered for all Foundation papers (maximum grade C) or one Higher up to all four. This is good because you might be better in one skill than in another. We also do the coursework option (25%) which enables you to get off to a flying start because you can re-take pieces. The Scheme of Work is really interesting and takes you on a journey to the foreign country and then back to England. You will have to do the usual tasks of coping in a shop, finding your way around town etc., but also you discover more about the wider world. You will do interesting things like working for a firm, looking at the media and discussing the environment and what we can do to help save our world!
You could take this course to prepare for advanced level courses such as an A/AS Level in Modern Languages and specialise in French or you may need to strengthen your grades by completing a foundation or intermediate vocational qualification. With further training, you could go into a job related to Languages such as a Teacher, Translator, or you may wish to use your French qualification to study or work over in France. You could also go straight into employment and do further training or part time study with the support of your employer.
