Philosophy and Ethics A Level *FEES PAYABLE* at Northampton High School

Course description

Philosophy & Ethics at AS and A2 Level involves an objective, critical study of the philosophical, spiritual and moral foundations of the modern world. Moreover, students will have the opportunity to consider the ultimate questions that human beings can ask. They will be able to make their own responses to these issues as well as considering the responses made by some of the world’s greatest thinkers.

In order to study Philosophy & Ethics at A Level no particular views, beliefs or faith commitment on the part of the student are presumed or required. What is expected is an interest in philosophical, religious, moral issues that would motivate a student to read widely, think deeply and contribute to class discussions. Students will have to produce essays on a regular basis in addition to consolidating class notes and preparing material for lessons. Occasionally they will be required to present topics for the group to discuss and criticise.

Course content

AS Level
Unit 1 Foundations: a) Philosophy of Religion b) Ethics

Unit 2 Investigations: Individual research into a topic of interest on which an essay will be written in an examination.

A2 Level
Unit 3 Developments: a) Philosophy of Religion b) Ethics

Unit 4 Implications: Synoptic study of the implications of adopting particular religious and philosophical positions

Entry requirements

There are no specific entry requirements but it helps if you have or can develop good literacy skills and a good work ethic. You do not need to have taken this subject for GCSE.
