Business Studies GCSE at Saint Benedict, A Catholic Voluntary Academy

Course description

The course runs over one year. There are two exam units and one controlled assessment.

Course content

Business Studies helps you to understand the world of work and how the economy functions and is a foundation for studying at a higher level.

Unit 1 (setting up a business) introduces candidates to issues concerning the setting up and operation of a business. It explores the activities of business and the reasons for success or failure. It includes areas such as Finance, People, Aims and Business Planning involved in setting up a business.

Unit 2 builds upon the content of Unit 1, allowing candidates to study businesses as they grow and the issues that expansion raises. Candidates will investigate the impact of growth and expansion on Finance, Human Resources and Marketing etc.

Unit 3 is a controlled assessment unit. The work must be each candidate’s own individual response and must be produced under controlled conditions. Students will examine pre-release material that requires them to undertake a business investigation and prepare a presentation about that business.

Entry requirements

All Level 2 students must have 4 grade D passes or equivalent and basic numeracy and literacy skills. 

An interest in the subject to be studied and the willingness to undertake independent study is essential.
