Sport Foundation Diploma at Freman College

Course description

The Foundation Diploma in Sport offers students a single option, two-year vocational course. The Foundation Diploma covers a range of topics related to sports participation, development, coaching and fitness.

The advantage of this course; being that students have the freedom to choose up to 3 other subjects to study alongside the Foundation Diploma supporting progression to higher education.

Course content

Students are required to complete 7 Units which are a mixture between theory and practical. Due to the nature of the course; Foundation Diploma students are required to complete the Level 2 Sports Leaders Award during the year which builds on coaching and leadership qualities and gains students an additional qualification. Students wanting to reach University as well as those who have an interest in pursuing a career in coaching or in the sports industry would be ideal for this course.

Entry requirements

Grade C or above in GCSE PE or at least a Merit in both Cambridge National Sport Science and Sports Studies. Grade C in GCSE English.


There will be 1 external examination on this course and 1 further externally assessed piece of coursework. The Foundation Diploma is ideal for those students who enjoy playing and coaching sport and PE and who prefer mainly continual coursework assessments. With the course being mainly assignment based the ability to meet deadlines and having good personal organisation is crucial.
